LYNX Blue Line trains will begin revenue service to campus Friday, March 16. To elevate awareness among students, faculty and staff, the Office of University Communications deployed a new creative tactic for campus – elevator wraps.
The custom-designed vinyl wraps “transport” students to diverse places throughout Charlotte, using destinations made easily accessible by the advent of light rail.
“The intent of the wraps was to highlight connections we’ll make within the city thanks to light rail,” said Stephen Ward, executive director of University Communications. “These elevator wraps are fun, and we hope they will get people talking about the places they’ll go on the train.”
Exterior doors of eight elevators across the main campus and at UNC Charlotte Center City were wrapped to resemble LYNX Blue Line train doors. When the “train doors” open, individuals stepping onto the elevators are surrounded by panoramic images that evoke being immersed in a location around Charlotte. Information about the light rail station that serves that location is displayed on the interior doors of the elevators.
Elevators on main campus display images throughout the city of Charlotte, while the elevators at UNC Charlotte Center City show main campus panoramas to reinforce the connection between campuses.
Elevator wraps are in the Popp Martin Student Union, Atkins Library, Cato Hall and UNC Charlotte Center City. UComm staff members designed the wraps and worked with an external vendor on their production and installation.
